One of best parts of being involved with the Her Business Wellington network is choosing a worthy charity that the HBW Wellington network can sponsor throughout the year. Even though there are several charities out there that equally need all of our help, I chose the Mary Potter Hospice.

I can admit that on a personal note, I have experienced first hand on how wonderful an organisation like this is, under extreme and on mostly unfortunate circumstances, for the individual and families.

As women in business, we become so focused on the growth of our business, expanding, bottom line profit/loss and many other facets of the business that we deal with from day to day. Sometimes we need to take a break in the traffic to remember those that have not been so lucky.

The Mary Potter hospice offers free palliative care to all people with a terminal illness in the Wellington-Porirua-Kapiti region, regardless of age, religion or ethnic origin. The ability to pay is not a factor, as all of their services are offered at no charge.

One question that many people ask is...How much does it cost to run the service?

Mary Potter hospice needs to raise $8 million each year - about half of this is funded by the government; the Hospice fundraises for the remainder, through a variety of sources in the community.

Te Omanga receives 35% of its annual funding needs from the local community with the balance being provided through a contract with the Hutt Valley District Health Board. They still require over $2.3 million of this from their local community  - which can be a tremendous challenge.

Her Business Wellington are proud to support the Mary Potter Hospice and Te Omanga hospice, as our Charity of Choice.

2010

HER Business Group Ltd (Sally Connell) in association with Samantha Hannah and Josh Mossman, from Section Zero Model Management, held their second annual 'Winterwonderland Charity Fashion Show' in the Atrium behind Red Square, on Saturday 7th May 2010.

The evening opened to a sellout audience, who were dazzled by Grant Walker - MC, the stunning clothing, fabulous designers and dynamic models, all in support to raise funds for the Mary Potter hospice.

Over $17,000.00 was raised during the evening, with all proceeds of the tickets going back to the hospice and funds raised through the charity auction.
